A Magical Transformation: From a Dated Foyer to an Enchanting Entryway

Stepping into a home for the first time is like opening the cover of a new book, filled with the promise of stories yet to be written. When I first laid eyes on our two – story entryway, I was greeted with a sense of grandeur. There was an undeniable charm in its spaciousness, a certain “big and nice” quality that made it feel like a proper welcome to our abode. But as the seasons changed and we celebrated our first Halloween and Christmas within these walls, I began to see the space in a different light. What once seemed impressive now felt a bit cold, lacking the warmth and personality that I craved in a home.

That’s when the idea of a transformation took root. I realized that a one – story entryway was not just a design preference; it was a necessity for creating the cozy, inviting atmosphere I envisioned. And so, our journey to reimagine this space began. It was a slow and deliberate process, taking a full two years to complete, but every moment was worth it.

The first major change was closing in the second story. This not only gave us a more intimate entryway but also created a wonderful new space on the second floor—a children’s library, a haven for young minds to explore and dream. With the structure altered, it was time to add the finishing touches that would bring the room to life.

Herringbone wood floors were my first love in this renovation. Their intricate pattern adds a touch of elegance and warmth that is simply irresistible. We installed them in the entryway, as well as in our main bedroom, creating a sense of continuity throughout the home. The rest of the house features plain white oak floors that complement the herringbone beautifully, all with a soft white wash stain that gives them a light, airy feel.

We decided to keep the original front doors, giving them a new lease on life with a fresh coat of paint. The double front doors are not just a functional feature; they are a canvas for my seasonal creativity. I love adorning them with two matching wreaths, swapping them out as the seasons change, each one telling a different story and setting the tone for what lies inside.

One of the most unique features of the new entryway is the wallpapered ceiling. It’s a bold choice, but it has transformed the space in ways I never imagined. Looking up, you’re greeted with a pattern that adds depth, character, and a touch of whimsy. Along with the herringbone floors and carefully chosen molding details, the ceiling makes this room truly my dream space.

The wood moldings were a splurge, but they were worth every penny. They add an element of sophistication and interest, defining the space and making it feel more cohesive. And the arches we added are not just architectural details; they serve as a gentle invitation, giving a peek into the adjacent living spaces and creating a sense of flow throughout the home.

The color palette we chose for the room plays a crucial role in its overall ambiance. Sherwin Williams’ Marshmallow, my go – to clean, bright white, adorns the interior, creating a light – filled backdrop. The outside of the door is painted Meadow Sage by Sherwin Williams, a soft, calming hue that welcomes guests from the outside world. Inside the door, Behr’s Pinky Beige adds a touch of warmth and a hint of playfulness.

As for the decor, each piece was carefully selected to enhance the room’s charm. From the wreaths that grace the front doors to the vintage rug that adds a touch of history and character, every item tells a story. The console table, mirror, floor lamp, and chandelier all work together to create a harmonious and inviting space. And let’s not forget the Chinatown Art Print, a unique piece that adds a splash of color and personality.

I’ve also discovered some amazing Etsy shops for vintage rugs, like Oushak Rugs, Turkish Ruggram, and Jewel Rugs Collection. These treasures from the past bring a sense of soul and individuality to the room, making it truly one – of – a – kind.

Looking at the before and after of this space, it’s hard to believe it’s the same entryway. What started as a dated, impersonal “lawyer foyer” has been transformed into a cozy, inviting haven that sets the tone for our entire home. It’s a testament to the power of patience, vision, and the love and care we’ve poured into making this house our home.
